When floor space starts to tighten, the unused height of the building becomes valuable. Mezzanine floors and multi-tier shelving make better use of the height in warehouses, logistics centres and production buildings. They create space for storage or other activities within the existing building, without extending its footprint.
Each mezzanine floor is planned around its location, intended use and load requirements. The supporting steel structure and floor deck are designed for specified point loads and uniformly distributed loads. Decking materials and surface finishes are selected to suit storage, production or office use.
A warehouse mezzanine floor can also be positioned above low shelving, creating a separate level for small parts storage, packing or assembly. Other uses include offices, break rooms, staff facilities and display areas.
Access stairs, steel guardrails, toe boards and loading gates are planned as part of the layout. The aim is to put the available space to work while keeping access, materials handling and the activities on each level properly organised.

When storage, packing and production compete for the same floor area, the unused height above them can offer room for a different layout. Mezzanine floors add a usable level inside an existing building, providing space for activities that would otherwise take up the ground floor. This makes them a practical option for warehouses, logistics centres and industrial premises where more floor space is needed without a building extension.
Multi-tier shelving arranges storage on more than one accessible level. A mezzanine floor can also provide a separate working or storage area above low shelving systems. In this arrangement, the space below remains in use while the upper floor is assigned to another function. This allows different activities to share the same building without competing for the same ground-floor area.
In warehouses and logistics centres, small parts storage on the upper level can accommodate slower-moving products. This gives those goods a defined location while making use of space above the main warehouse floor.
Workstations and assembly areas can be positioned above the warehouse, on a separate level from forklift traffic. Packing areas are another common application: moving packing upstairs leaves the ground floor available for storage. Mezzanine floors can also accommodate offices, break rooms and staff facilities within a production or warehouse building, as well as exhibition and display areas.
Access and edge protection form part of the overall design. Open edges are fitted with steel guardrails and toe boards, and loading openings have loading gates for handling goods. Stair access is planned around the operation, with the number and position of staircases determined by the layout and the activities on each level.
Safety provisions are designed in line with applicable requirements. For long-term industrial use, loading, safety and adaptability remain key considerations when selecting mezzanine floors and multi-tier shelving.
