Loose cartons, small parts and awkward loads can turn a pallet racking level into a safety risk. Wire mesh decking gives the bay a secure, open shelf surface, helping to keep goods where you put them and reducing the chance of anything dropping through the gaps.
By fitting a wire mesh deck onto a pallet racking level, you can store small items more safely and make lower levels practical for piece picking. The deck also helps limit damage if a pallet is handled carelessly and slips between the beams, as the mesh can temporarily support the mispositioned load and prevent a bigger incident.
The water-permeable mesh structure suits sprinkler-protected warehouses, and the non-combustible material is a safer alternative to plywood shelving when fire safety is a priority.

Standard pallet racking is built around pallets, not loose goods. The moment cartons, small components or mixed items end up on bare beams, the risk of items falling increases and the working area below becomes less predictable. A wire mesh deck panel turns a pallet racking level into a stable storage surface, so the racking can be used more safely and more flexibly without changing the basic structure of the system.
Wire mesh decking is a practical accessory when you want to improve safety and make better use of each racking level. The mesh helps to stop goods from falling through the gaps between the beams. That protects both people working in the aisle and the products you store.
A mesh deck also supports safer handling when pallets are not perfectly placed. If handling is rushed or visibility is limited, a pallet can slip into the space between the pallet racking beams. In that situation the wire mesh decking can carry the poorly positioned load temporarily and reduce the chance of a larger accident.
One of the most common reasons to install wire mesh decking is to store and pick small items directly from a pallet racking level. With a mesh deck in place, the level can be used more like a shelf: boxes and smaller units can be stored neatly and accessed quickly from the aisle. This is especially useful on the lowest levels, where operators often pick individual items or partial cartons.
The mesh decking can also be combined with dividers. Dividers make it easier to separate product types, keep stock in its own section and maintain order when multiple items share the same level.
In many warehouses, fire safety is not just a box to tick, it is part of day-to-day risk management. Wire mesh decking suits warehouses that have automatic fire suppression systems, because the open, water-permeable structure allows sprinkler water to pass through the level if it is needed. With a solid deck, water can be blocked and the effectiveness of a sprinkler system can be reduced.
The material is non-combustible, which makes wire mesh decking a safer alternative to plywood when you want a deck surface on a pallet racking level. The open structure supports the idea of sprinklers working through the racking levels instead of being stopped at the first solid surface.
Two load classes are available:
The heavy duty wire mesh deck is not the same as a basic light-duty mesh panel that is commonly used only to support pallets. Heavy duty mesh decking is designed to take point loads, and the intermediate supports are built with a tubular structure. The sizing has been designed and tested using a 600 × 600 mm load placed between the beams.
It is still important to use the right deck for the right job. A light-duty mesh deck is typically intended to support pallets, and the load should be carried by the pallet racking beams rather than resting directly on the mesh. When point loading is expected, choose the heavy duty option and always respect the racking system’s load limits and safe working practices.
Wire mesh decking for pallet racking is normally dimensioned to match the standard bay sizes of the racking system in use. Common sizes are often selected to suit widely used systems such as Dexion and Mecalux.
Special sizes can also be produced when the required quantity is suitable for series production. For single pieces, a custom solution is typically difficult to realise. If you are considering a non-standard size, it is best to plan it in advance so the deck dimensions match the beam spacing and the intended load type.
