Both treads measure 360 × 230 mm. The broad surface gives the foot more room than a narrow ladder rung and makes climbing feel more natural. The upper tread is also the standing platform, giving the user room to place both feet at the required height. Each tread is covered with a grooved rubber mat. Its textured surface improves contact between the shoe and the step during normal use.
The stiles are made from strong double-box-section aluminium. This profile resists bending and twisting as the steps are opened, used and folded away. The aluminium frame is also easy to carry between nearby shelves, rooms or work areas.
